Train passes through MIT building

In addition to great bike-paths, the MIT campus provides generous right-of way for freight trains. My son and I watched this CSX engine 6241 pull a load of shredded scrap metal and refrigeration cars through the campus last weekend. A few cars, including a police cruiser, ignored the flashing Railroad Crossing lights and bell. I wish I’d had my video camera for that one.

Artist Tim Murdoch on his work “Who’s That”

Artist Tim Murdoch
Tim forwarded this piece to me about the his installation current showing at the AXIOM gallery.

“Who’s That”
April 2008
Tim Murdoch

“Who’s That” is an interactive installation that will
be installed at the Axiom Gallery as part of a
Collision Collective show titled “Super Artificial”.
The work is a series of 25 spring mounted 9″ mirrors,
arranged on a wall in a pattern that forms a
relationship between the human form and the
architecture of the space. Each mirror contains a
vibrating motor, wired in parallel and attached to a
motion sensor placed somewhere away from the
installation.

The idea for this work came about from the simple
fascination that a reflected image is “slippery” and
seemingly detached from the surface plane of the
mirror. A mirror reflects light and image from it’s
surroundings while at the same time opens a perceptual
hole through the surroundings. Mirrors do the same to
people. When we gaze into a mirror there is a sudden
rush of self-consciousness, a feeling of disconnection
with the image being reflected, or a scramble for the
mind to connect the interior self with the exterior
image. It can be a very isolating moment. When the
presence of another is detected this moment is
disturbed and the image in the mirror changes, becomes
less clear.

When I was working on this piece in my studio there
was a lot of construction activity in my neighborhood.
Lots of jack hammering, cranes lifting and dropping
heavy objects, trucks dumping and bouncing on the
ground, generally lots of vibrations shaking the
building. This happened to be the ideal conditions for
working with springs. The mirrors and other projects
that I’m working on were activated without the use of
motors and sensors. This connected the work in a very
natural way to the environment. I’m hoping that the
trains shaking the floors of Axiom Gallery act on the
mirrors in the same way as the construction equipment
did in my studio.

Ultimately though the piece is about looking. In a
gallery or museum context a viewers experience is
highly mediated. Expectations are governed and framed
by the associations and preconceptions of the Art
experience.

Construction to begin at Pinebank Mansion site

The JP Gazette reported recently that work to create a memorial for the demolished Pinebank Mansion will likely begin mid-summer. The fencing shown below will be removed, and the site will feature “a stone outline of the former mansion; educational signs; a walking path; and benches. The project is budgeted for about $330,000.”
